CREST * Investigators is a brand new, UK-Wide Award Scheme that enables children to solve scientific problems through practical investigations. the activities focus on thinking about, talking about and doing science. They are designed to be used primarily outside of class time
(e.g. science clubs), though some are useful for use in the classroom. The activities develop children's scientific enquiry skills in an enjoyable context with links to the National Curriculum where appropriate. The scheme replaces the popular First Investigators and Young Investigators schemes from September 2007 and is suitable for children of all abilities. Fun Maths Roadshow
7-16
The Fun Maths Roadshow is run by The University of Liverpool. It can be run in your school. Maths puzzles are set out on tables in a hall or large space. Children move around the room tackling the puzzles in any order they choose. Each pupil has a customised response sheet to be initialed by a helper when each activity is successfully completed. Helpers could be staff or older pupils from the school. In a typical session of 60 - 75 minutes, with pupils working singly or in pairs, most pupils will complete well over a dozen activities.
Greenpower Goblins
7-11
This is a kit car specifically designed to offer primary school pupils a chance to get involved in a simple, practical engineering project to build a 'racing car' that embraces many relevant aspects of science and technology. There is no entry fee but the kit costs £685 plus VAT and delivery and can be used year after year.
JETSET
7 - 11
Junior Entering Tomorrow's Science, Engineering and Technology. A fun and exciting event that stimulates students with STEM related activities. Students work in teams carrying out STEM related tasks written into a scenario. The theme can be adapted to suit your school. We can hold it at the school or at a selected venue. Costs do apply.
K'Nex Challenge
7 - 11
The aim of the challenge is to provide primary school pupils with an introduction to the exciting world of engineering and technology. There is a school challenge the winners from there go to a local final then local winners go onto the regional final and regional winners then go onto a National Final.
Nuffield Foundation Primary D&T
5-11
This curriculum development project has produced a set of teacher materials, primary solutions in design and technology, that can be purchased at low cost from the Design & Technology Association. The pack includes a CD-ROM that contains 24 units of work, a teachers guide and a sample of unit work. The units of work can be downloaded free of charge from their website.
Passport to Science
All
This is an exciting new scheme which aims to encourage primary school children with Science in the North West. The students collect stamps in a passport booklet as a reward for taking part in science activities around the region. Stamps are awarded for taking part in activities individually, as a class or with their parents, carers and families. There are activities that can be carried out at home or at school and also attractions that will be included in the scheme. A "graduation" ceremony concludes the scheme each year. For further information please see the passport to science page or contact Janet Greig.
Primary Engineer
5-11
A primary liaison project where primary teachers are trained through secondary school hubs ensuring that good Design & Technology practice initiates in Primary and continues onto secondary education. Challenge activities in line with the National Curriculum in England celebrate teachers' and pupils' work and lead to regional and national finals. Training courses begin with 'Structures, Mechanisms and Basic Electrics' and follow onto 'Computer Control', 'Textiles' and 'CAD/CAM'.
Science Workshops
5-7 & 7-11
We run two science workshops, The ‘Materials in Action ‘ workshops for KS2 and the ‘Foundation Science’ workshops for KS1 Pupils. Both workshops are half day sessions that involve the children in a highly practical and investigative approach to learning science. They experience working as a scientist, thinking about the safety and making predictions about the outcome of their experiments, recording results and observations. There is a charge for each session.
Shape the Future
Shape the Future is a campaign to raise awareness of engineering and technology as a stimulating career option and an essential and exciting part of modern Britain. It will start young people on a journey, making connections between the issues they face and the solutions engineering and technology can provide. And, to help them on their way, it will signpost opportunities for them to do one more thing – such as joining a Young Engineers club at their school or another similar initiative, participating in a classroom discussion or logging onto a website for more information. For more information about competitions, challenges and initiatives visit their website.
The Giant Tetrahedron Workshop
7-11
A brilliant combination of construction and practical mathematics, in which every pupil is involved, but in which success depends on effective teamwork. Initially, the children don't believe that with just sticks and rubber bands, they can build a 4 metre high structure that is so stable that they can all get inside it. In an exciting practical way, they learn about the strength of triangles in construction. Minimum group size is 24 please ensure that you have access to a room or hall that will hold a 4 metre high structure. There is a charge for each session.
Young Engineers Club Network
7-19
This network supports over 1200 active Young Engineer Clubs spread across the UK. They provide guidance on how to establish and sustain a club, where to obtain discounts, an activity bank of suitable activities and a whole host of other useful services. Club achievements are celebrated via the Club of the Year competition.
