CREativity in Science and Technology

BA CREST is a nationally recognized accreditation scheme for project work in the fields of science and technology. Aimed at students aged 11-19, BA CREST awards encourage students to develop their scientific curiosity, problem-solving and communication skills.

Through a mentoring system, the scheme facilitates links between schools and industry or higher education. It enables students of all abilities to explore real scientific, engineering and technological problems for themselves and promotes work-related learning. BA CREST awards motivate students, build confidence and encourage them to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology.BA CREST awards are available in two subject areas - Science or Technology - at three levels: Click on the links below to download the registration forms for each level.

Students who have completed BA CREST project work have the opportunity to display their work at Regional Finals. Outstanding projects are selected for the prestigious national BA CREST Science Fair. For further information about CREST and ideas for projects please visit the BA website.

The The UK Young Scientists' and Engineers' Fair

The The UK Young Scientists' and Engineers' Fair is an annual event for young people to exhibit outstanding research projects and compete for top prizes. This year the fair will be held in the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in central London on the 4th - 5th March 2009 as a curtain-raiser to National Science and Engineering Week.

The 2009 event is a collaboration between many science and engineering institutions led by the BA and Young Engineers with support from the ETB (Engineering Technology Board). It will comprise of the national celebrations for the CREST and Young Engineers schemes as well as interactive exhibits, demonstrations and shows for visiting school groups. The new National Science Competition’s final will be held at the Fair

Students can self nominate themselves to attend the Fair. This process will only open in September please click here for further details about this process.

Please see the BA Website for more details about the The The UK Young Scientists' and Engineers' Fair

CREST * Investigators is a brand new, UK-wide award scheme that enables children to solve scientific problems through practical investigation. The activities focus on thinking about, talking about, and doing science. They are designed to be used primarily outside of class time (e.g. in a science club), though some are suitable for use in the classroom. The activities develop children’s scientific enquiry skills in an enjoyable context with links to the National Curriculum where appropriate. The scheme replaces the popular First Investigators and Young Investigators schemes and is suitable for children, usually aged from 5 to 12, of all abilities.

There are different levels:

  • At Star level (usually for 5-7 year olds) children discuss, solve problems and share experiences. This will normally take about 8 weeks.
  • At SuperStar level (usually for 7-11 year olds) children work independently, discuss ideas and how to test them, solve simple problems and decide how to share results. This will normally take about 12 weeks.
  • At MegaStar level (usually for 8-12 year olds) children research and think about scientific problems,
make independent decisions about materials and procedures, record and interpret results, organise their work and communicate ideas. This will normally take about 12 weeks.
  • After completing two MegaStar projects, children who are passionate about science can
become a Young Science Ambassador. Within the MegaStar pack, there is a set of ideas and support materials. These will enable small groups of Ambassadors to promote science and technology in their school and neighbourhood.

Progressing through the levels, children undertake scientific problems in increasingly broad contexts. Star level looks at issues relevant to children’s everyday lives. MegaStar level explores more wide-ranging problems including global and cross-cultural issues. CREST * Investigators activities have been developed to ensure a smooth transition to secondary CREST.
